So, what is this new plant-based superstar skin-care ingredient?!

Recently presented by scientists at the 256th National Meeting & Exposition of the American Chemical Society, maple leaf extract was reported to be the new equivalent to retinoids and “Botox in a bottle” by directly fighting the breakdown of elastin in the skin, aka one of the elements that keep your complexion bouncy, smooth, and youthful.

“Wrinkles are caused by loss of elasticity, collagen, and fat in the lower layers of the skin,” Shari Marchbein, a dermatologist recently told Allure.
“If we can protect the elastin, aka elastic fibers, in the skin, we can maintain a strong healthy skin foundation to prevent the development of wrinkles, or even improve their appearance once they have formed,” added Joshua Zeichner, the director of cosmetic and clinical research in dermatology at Mount Sinai Hospital in New York City.
In the recent past, combating fine lines was recently the job of two skin-care ingredients in particular:
- Retinol – a vitamin A derivative often touted as the “gold standard” (thanks to its ability to increase cell turnover)
- Hyaluronic acid, a humectant , which reduces the loss of moisture in cells and hydrates and plumps skin from the inside out.
However, these ingredients will often leave sensitive-skin red and irritated; not something we want to associate with the skin on our faces.
Benefits of Maple Leaf Extract
Fortunately, the red maple leaf extract is nature’s answer, and has been hiding in plain sight all these years! Acting as a guardian for skin’s precious elastin as you age, researchers found that maple leaf extract “could inhibit the activity of elastase, which is the enzyme responsible for breaking down elastin,” Hang Ma, PhD, from the University of Rhode Island and one of the researchers behind the study, stated.
The key is a compound found in the maple called “glucitol-core-containing gallotannins,” which, as Shari Marchbein explained, seems to inhibit the activity of elastin-destroying elastase, thereby preventing saggy skin. “There also seems to be some evidence based on the research presented that these compounds are anti-inflammatory and can lighten dark spots,” which is another big plus for us yearning for more youthful looking skin.
Best of all, maple leaf extract is set out to be a topical application, not an injected toxin. This makes it more widely appealing and easier for everyone to use – and without the side-effects that such injectables and other chemical-based products can generate.
